Did you know that in 1999 there were only fourteen emergency beds for homeless women in Brisbane while there were 500 for homeless men? (BHTF Report Nov 1999).
These figures motivated the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, in partnership with St Vincent de Paul Society, to secure the support of the Brisbane City Council to address this need. The aim was to ensure that when the crisis of emergency is over, women and children, victims of domestic violence, would have transitional accommodation.
Today the Good Sams supported transitional housing offers safe, secure and affordable transitional accommodation for women and their children who are escaping from domestic violence. Housing is provided for a period of approximately six to twelve months with counselling support before long term accommodation is sought. The project equips women with enhanced capacity to achieve self-reliance and greater control of their lives and to break the cycle and provide hope for the future.
It is our hope that eventually all the women will have a place of their own that they can call home.
Note: The Queensland Government during the 2010/11 financial year spent more than $190 million to tackle domestic and family violence including women's shelters, counselling, perpetrator programs and other services. The Government is committed to ensuring support is available to women suffering from domestic violence or facing the challenges of homelessness.
